Upon reaching the island of their rookery, the penguins swim quickly, looking for a safe place to land. The shallows around an island are treacherous, for it is here where leopard seals lurk, ambushing penguins as they make the awkward transition from land to sea. Usually, groups of several penguins find a common place to land. Returning penguins erupt from the water with a splash, then make their way up the island to their rookery. |
